Ethical guidelines

We would like to thank the UK Council for the Registration of Forensic Practitioners (CRFP) on whose Code of Conduct the following guidelines are based. To develop this code, the CRFP consulted widely and conducted research on the subject among numerous forensic scientists.]

  1. Bearing in mind that the forensic's main duty is to the courts and the administration of justice, his obligation is to present the evidence, in writing or orally, in an equitable and impartial manner.

  1. Act with honesty, integrity, objectivity and impartiality: you do not have to discriminate on the basis of race, beliefs, sex, language, sexual orientation, social situation, age, lifestyle or political beliefs.

  1. Comply with the code of conduct of any professional body of which they are members.

  1. Provide expert advice and evidence only within the limits of your professional competence and only when it is appropriate to do so.

  1. Take appropriate action when you have reason to believe that a certain situation may give rise to the commission of an injustice.

  1. Take all reasonable measures to maintain and promote your professional competence, taking into account research and innovations within your field of competence and applying quality assurance techniques.

  1. Take all reasonable measures to obtain all the material evidence available and pertinent, and determine, as far as possible, if any has been subject to alteration before entering your possession; also ensure that their integrity and security are maintained while they are in your possession.

  1. Accept responsibility for all work carried out under your supervision, direct or indirect.

  1. Carry out all work in accordance with the established principles of your profession, using proven methods and appropriate equipment and materials.

  1. Clearly and precisely record the examinations you carry out, their methods and their results, with sufficient detail so that another competent forensic in the same field of work can independently verify your work.

  1. Clearly, broadly and impartially state:

  1. Its powers.

  1. The material on which you have based your research and conclusions.

  1. The summaries, results and conclusions of your work and that of your team.

  1. Any way in which your research or findings were limited, especially if your access to relevant material was restricted, or if you believe that limitations on your time, human, physical, or financial resources have jeopardized the quality of their work.

  1. Reconsider and, if necessary, modify its results, conclusions, opinions or advice in the light of new information or new developments in the relevant field; take the initiative to promptly inform your client or whoever employs you of any such changes.

  1. Preserve confidentiality, unless:

  1. Has been authorized by whoever employs it to reveal something.

  1. A court ordered you to reveal something.

  1. The law requires you to disclose something.

  1. Your primary duty to the courts and the administration of justice requires you to make that disclosure.

  1. Maintain professional secrecy: this can only be waived by those who employ it. Said secrecy protects communications, verbal and written, between professional legal advisers and their clients, as well as between advisers and expert witnesses who intervene in relation to the legal advisory function or taking into account the legal procedures and purposes thereof. .
